Press Release

Brentwood's Mayor goes shopping Waterstones Chicken and Frog and St Francis Hospice

Date: 6 September 2021

Brentwood Borough Council Mayor Cllr Olivia Sanders has welcomed the new Waterstones to the town, popped into independent book retailer Chicken & Frog and visited St Francis Hospice’s new store.

The mini tour centred around Cllr Sanders love of books and her wish to buy political books for her partner, childrens’ books for her young relatives and art history books for herself, “I am delighted that Waterstones has returned to Brentwood and the shop is amazing, bright, airy and so welcoming. Chicken & Frog of course has moved to Crown Street and is well known in the community for its innovations like workshops, events and sensory areas for children. St Francis Hospice is one of my chosen charities for the year and its new shop is huge and has so much variety.”

The Manager of Waterstones Paul Watson said; “It is so good to be back in Brentwood and so many of our regular customers have been delighted to return. It was never our desire to leave but it has been heart-warming to have been welcomed back so enthusiastically by the people of Brentwood. We're looking forward to helping customers with their book needs and chat for a long time we hope.” The Mayor purchased Paintings of that Revolutionised Art crossing politics and art and the The Vanishing Man, In Pursuit of Velazquez all great books for the interests the Mayor has.

The Mayor was particularly keen on purchasing books for her niece and nephew who are nicknamed “Chicken” and “Toad” so Natasha Radford at Chicken & Frog was able to help and said; “We were delighted to see the Mayor and had plenty of ideas to help her purchase something suitable for the children. We have a freshly hatched section of the shop, stocking an eclectic range of fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels, suitable for teens and adults. We have also added a beautiful gift selection for book-mad people like us.” Cllr Sanders snapped up Hansel & Gretel and Goldilocks and a sensory book about animals.

At the St Francis Hospice shop Cllr Sanders found a range of coffee table type books; “My partner collects political books and I am about to start studying an History of Art Diploma in October so finding not one but four great books on soldiers, the history of WWII, JFKennedy and Francesco’s Italy all for just £10 made my day. Charity shops are great for recycling of course and support so many good causes. St Francis Hospice runs on donations so it is vital that we all support its shops whenever we can.”

Michelle Nicholls, Commercial and Safety Director at Saint Francis Hospice, said, “We’re delighted to be one of Brentwood Borough Council Mayor Cllr Olivia Sanders’ chosen charities and were thrilled that she found some great books for both her partner and herself when she popped into our new Brentwood store.

We have a great collection of books at fantastic prices. Every donation we receive helps to fund our experienced end of life care to the local community when they need us the most. Please come and visit, we promise you’ll be impressed by our range of high-quality preloved goods.”
