Brentwood Borough Council has announced the winners of the Civic Awards

Date: 6 May 2022

The Civic Awards recognise individuals who have dedicated their time to help others in the borough and make a difference to the community. The awards were presented at the Civic Dinner on Friday 8th April at Mount Avenue Banqueting Suite.

The winners were:

  • Lifetime Achievement – Desmond Burrett
  • Lifetime Achievement – Peter Hyam
  • Service to the Community – Allison Marshall
  • Service to the Community – Nick Holmes

Mayor of Brentwood, Cllr Olivia Sanders said “The Civic awards shine a light on those who provide support and work hard to make Brentwood a better place to live. These winners put in an astounding effort into the community and help many across the borough. I was delighted to present these awards to our winners and show appreciation for their achievements.”

About the winners

Desmond Burrett started boxing from a young age and was an RAF boxing champion from 1957 to 1960. Desmond has helped train young people with boxing, and he aims to make an impact on young lives in the borough through sport. Desmond has worked as an unpaid volunteer throughout the borough at amateur boxing clubs and now currently works at the Brentwood Centre. Despite Desmond’s knee and hip replacements, he still gets involved from a seating position to help coach new children who join the club. He has provided kindness and patience to support young people and influence the lives of many.

For over 20 years, Peter Hyam has served the Brentwood and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, where he has held positions like Member Secretary and Treasurer. Peter has provided outstanding support to the Royal British Legion and his work has made a huge impact to ensure everything continues to function. Peter has helped to raise thousands for charities through organising events such as St Georges Day lunches and Summer Socials. Peter’s commitment to the Royal British Legion and support to raise money is honourable.

During the pandemic, Allison Marshall volunteered on behalf of Brentwood Mutual Aid at the Vaccination Centre, where she assisted with patients and administrative duties. Alongside this, Allison volunteered at the Daily bread pop up café, helping with prescriptions and food for those in need. Allison helped to raise £2500 through a virtual walk for Kids Inspire, a charity of which Allison has continued to support. Recently, Allison has spent her time with a vulnerable lady struggling with the difficulties she’s faced with and has continued to support her and provide her with kindness and trust. Allison is selfless and caring, becoming an important pillar of the community.

Nick Holmes founded Stones Athletic YFC in June 2004, and since then has created a successful club with 180 players varying in ages. Nick has put efforts into fundraising to support the club funds, encouraging young people to further their training and qualifications and supporting them throughout. Alongside this, Nick has been involved with the charity Starburst Ingatestone, set up in 1999, to help provide free firework displays for those in Ingatestone and Fryerning on new years eve. This has continued to raise thousands for many charities within the Borough. Nick’s persistence to his fundraising has been a backbone to the Borough and helped many.
