Press Release

Tea Dance events are swinging into the summer in Brentwood

Date: 21 June 2022

Popular monthly tea dance events welcoming people with SEN and dementia are set to lead the way into a sizzling summer at Brentwood.

Brentwood Borough Council has commissioned Chat 1st, an award-winning programme of wellbeing in Essex, to help with the tea dance events, which are being funded by the Health and Wellbeing Board.

Chat 1st are working towards improving the mental, physical and social wellbeing of people across Essex, by giving them activities and coping tools to change their lives for the better.

The tea dance events have come back post COVID and are now a firm favourite with the local community.

Councillor Will Russell, Chair of the Community, Environment and Enforcement Committee said:

“Most people enjoy a good tea dance and these ones are especially great for people who are socially isolated and have learning difficulties or dementia. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun and socialise with others in the community- some people come along to listen to the music, others love to dance and everyone can make new friends and catch up with old ones. The gentle exercise will also help improve overall health and well-being too. I would encourage people to come along and put their best foot forward.”

Tea dances have always been popular in the borough. Prior to COVID, the dances were run at the Brentwood Centre. The current sessions are at the Nightingale Centre in Warley, Brentwood. Costs are £5 per session, which include tea or coffee and a cake.

The next tea dance is on Thursday 23 June from 11am – 1pm. For further details about all forthcoming tea dance events, visit the Chat 1st website www.chat1st.co.uk/activities
