Brentwood Borough Council celebrates Armed Forces Day

Date: 21 June 2022

Brentwood Borough Council showed its support and appreciation for Armed Forces nationally yesterday, with the Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Olivia Sanders, raising the Armed Forces Day flag outside the Town Hall.

Before the flag was raised, Cadet Alfie Riches from Shenfield School CCF, Captain Nick Allston of Essex Transport Squadron and Syd Bryer from the Royal British Legion (Brentwood Branch), all recited poignant poems that showed support and recognition for the contribution of those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces. The event finished with a prayer from Father Matthew, St Thomas’ of Canterbury Church before the Mayor raising the Armed Forces Day flag.

This year, Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 25 June. The Day celebrates the UK’s Armed Forces - past, present and future. Brentwood Borough Council and other local boroughs are celebrating around the country, alongside other involved organisations and communities.

The Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Olivia Sanders said:

“Brentwood has a long tradition of honouring our Armed Forces and today is an opportunity for us to show our support and appreciation for the men and women who are in the Armed Forces community. These are the serving troops, as well as the cadets, service families and the veterans. By flying our flag outside our Town Hall, we are showing all support for personnel, past, present and future. Showing our support provides a huge boost to the troops and their families.

“Many of the armed forces have made sacrifices to protect the UK and its interests internationally and here - at home. I would like to thank them for their valued and tireless efforts and their huge contribution towards protecting our country.”
