Press Release

Council responds to Historic England announcement that Brentwood Cathedral has been listed at Grade II*

Date: 15 July 2022

Brentwood Cathedral (the Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Helen) has been listed at Grade II* by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on the advice of Historic England.

Responding to the announcement, Chair of the Planning and Licensing Committee at Brentwood Borough Council, Cllr Thomas Bridge said:

“I’m thrilled that the beautifully designed Brentwood Cathedral now has a Grade ll* listing designation. I’m a parishioner of the cathedral, and I’m delighted to see this historic moment happen for Brentwood. I would especially like to thank Father Martin Boland, Dean of the Cathedral for working tirelessly to protect the significance of the Cathedral. The Council was consulted on the listing application and fully supported the recommendation by Historic England.

“This amazing cathedral is at the heart of Brentwood’s Town Centre, in the Conservation Area, and it has now been officially recognised and given the status that it truly deserves, as a Grade ll* Listing- of which there are less than 6% of buildings nationally. This is a great achievement, and we would like to thank the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Historic England for making this happen and acknowledging that this classical cathedral has such a unique place in our history."
